THE GENESIS OF FRANCOS RESERVA
José Neiva Correia began working in 1974, invited by Eng. Octavio Pato one of the top Portuguese winemakers in the 60, 70 and 80’s.
In 2004 and to celebrate his 30 years of Oenology Mr. José Neiva presented three great wines. The CONSENSUS (Ribatejo DOC), the ESCADA (Douro DOC) and FRANCOS (Alenquer DOC).
A year later in 2005 he also presented the FRANCOS RESERVA (Alenquer DOC), produced and vinified at the Quinta de Porto Franco, in his family for generations.
FRANCOS RESERVA
FRANCOS RESERVA is a unique and special wine, produced from the grapes Touriga Nacional (65%), Touriga Franca (20%) and Alicante Bouschet (15%).
All the grapes and the vinification are from the Quinta de Porto Franco in the wine region of Lisboa, just 60 kilometers from downtown Lisbon.
Quinta de Porto Franco has been in Mr. José Neiva’s family for generations and it's his birthplace. The name Francos is a tribute to the family of Engº Neiva and to all who made it an icon of wine in Portugal.
Each year the harvest was made exclusively from the vineyard with the best sun exposure, and only the best bunches were selected on the spot, with the greatest potential to produce an excellent wine. This choice corresponds to a maximum of 5% production from selected vineyards.
Since the 2003 vintage the 2009 was the first vintage that Mr. Neiva select with quality to honor the name Francos. From the 2009 vintage DFJ did 13706 bottles.

Quinta de Porto Franco single estate
It was carefully vinified at a controlled fermentation temperature not exceeding 30 °C and fermented by the traditional method with two daily pumping. After fermentation the blanket was immersed for 30 days where he conducted the malolactic fermentation and extraction of soft tannins.
Wine is aged in new French of Allier oak barrels of 225 litre for 14 months. Ageing in bottle a minimum of 18 months after bottling.
It's a bright red, rich, full body, with a big structure and an harmonious balance between red fruits and the oak scents. In the tasting was smooth, intense, with a long, persistent and elegant finish.
A great wine for special ocasions and exquisite gastronomy. Excellent with a well-cured Portuguese ham from Barrancos or Chaves (Portuguese ham origins) or the Spanish Pata Negra, was also great complement to game, roasted red meats and long matured cheeses. We suggest serving this wine at the temperature of 16-18º C. We recommend also decanting the wine before serving as its unfiltered and gain with a previous breading for 15 minutes.

"Luxury (almost) at the gates of Lisbon When you want to make a special wine is essential to have good raw material. Here there is no problem, because the year helped and the grapes abound: it’s only necessary to know how to select them and treat them well in the cellar. After that was requested the knowledge to run all well. José Neiva Correia has it all and more."
